Student from Itabashi CampusWins Excellence Award at the 8th One Health Science Society Academic Conference

At the 8th One Health Science Society Academic Conference held at Saga University's Nabeshima Campus on Saturday, September 14, 2024, three Teikyo University students, Kirari Kato (2nd year, Faculty of Medical Technology), Ayame Iwaoka (4th year, Faculty of Medical Technology), and Haruka Kurose (6th year, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences), won Excellence Awards for their poster presentations.
Based on the standpoint of One Health, which holds that the balance between the health of humans, animals, and the environment is extremely important, this society aims to contribute to the health of humans, animals, and the environment by bringing together researchers from fields such as medicine, pharmacology, public health hygiene, veterinary medicine, agriculture, science, and engineering to report and discuss research results on emerging infectious diseases, zoonoses, and environmental pollution. This year's meeting was held under the theme of "Promoting the Health of Various Living Things."

On the day, Kato gave a presentation on "Regulation of expression of SLC26A7, an iodine transporter important for thyroid function, by the transcription factor TTF-1." In this presentation, he investigated the expression regulation mechanism of SLC26A7, a gene that causes congenital hypothyroidism, which was newly discovered in 2018. He found activity in the promoter region of the SLC26A7 gene and reported the possibility that transcriptional regulation occurs through TTF-1 binding.
Mr. Iwaoka gave a presentation titled "Development of a simple POCT method for amplifying and detecting nucleic acids." In this report, he reported on the development of a kit that can be used to detect infectious disease-causing bacteria using the PCR method, which previously required expensive equipment and reagents, as a POCT nucleic acid identification method that does not require special equipment and can be easily performed by anyone, anywhere.
Mr. Kurose gave a presentation titled "Expression of sulfotransferases in the thyroid gland is regulated by thyroid-stimulating hormone and intrafollicular thyroglobulin," in which he focused on the function of sulfotransferases in the biosynthesis and metabolism of thyroid hormones and reported on the mechanism by which their expression is regulated.
The content of these presentations was highly evaluated, which led to them receiving this award. We look forward to seeing even more success from these three in the future.
