Students from our Hachioji Campusparticipated in the Ome-Hamura Peace Messenger Project as university student leaders.

From July to August 2023, Ayaka Nakayama (2nd year Faculty of Law) from Teikyo University participated in the Ome-Hamura Peace Messenger Project as a university student leader. This project is implemented by the cities of Ome and Hamura with the aim of deepening students' learning and thoughts about peace through learning about war and interacting with survivors of the atomic bomb in Hiroshima, where the atomic bomb was dropped.
In the pre-training, the participants learned about history, including the events leading up to World War II and the Asia-Pacific War, and visited historical war sites during their visit to Hiroshima, deepening their understanding of the tragedy of war and their thoughts about peace through interactions with local junior high school students and atomic bomb survivors. In the post-training, they prepared to convey in their own words what they felt and thought during their visit to Hiroshima, and at the culmination of their trip, a report session, they presented what they experienced and learned in this program as "Peace Messengers" in front of the mayors of Ome and Hamura and other related parties.
Nakayama participated in this project when he was in the first year of junior high school, and this was his second time participating as a university student leader who coordinated the junior high school students. Regarding his participation as a university student leader, Nakayama said, "When I participated as a first year of junior high school, I didn't know much about history and there were some parts that I couldn't fully understand, so this time I wanted to support the junior high school students and re-learn the things that I didn't understand the last time." Nakayama supported one group from the pre-training to the dispatch report meeting, and reflected on his activities as a university student leader, saying, "During the pre-training, the junior high school students were awkward with each other because they were meeting for the first time, but I tried to create an atmosphere where they could talk easily by actively listening to their opinions. It was a lot of work, such as checking the reports written by the junior high school students and communicating with the city officials, but it was rewarding to see the junior high school students' growth."
Teikyo University will continue to support the various initiatives of its students.
