At the 6th Congress of International Advanced Surgery (ISLS 2025) held in Toronto, Canada from Wednesday, October 22nd to Saturday, October 25th, 2025, Professor Masaki Sugimoto of the Innovation Lab Okinaga Research Institute gave an oral presentation titled "AI-Driven Markerless Augmented Reality Navigation for Enhanced Spatial Recognition in Liver Surgery," and received a Travel Grant Award.
ISLS is an academic conference that shares cutting-edge research in the field of hepato-Surgery and promotes the international development of clinical techniques. Approximately 300 experts from 39 countries participated in the Toronto conference.
During the conference, the latest research results on topics such as minimally invasive hepato Surgery surgery, artificial intelligence (AI), augmented reality (AR) technology, and regenerative medicine were presented and lively discussions were held.
In his presentation, Professor Sugimoto proposed an augmented reality (AR) navigation system that applies markerless spatial recognition by AI, introducing a new Surgery support technology that provides real-time support for intraoperative spatial understanding. This system is expected to improve the safety and efficiency of liver Surgery, complement the surgeon's spatial judgment, and contribute to the sustainable use of medical resources. Upon receiving the award, Professor Sugimoto said, "I would like to express my sincere gratitude to my collaborators, the development team, and all those involved in this research. I will continue to promote the development of Surgery support systems that combine AI and XR technologies, and contribute to the realization of safer and more efficient medical care."
This research includes results from the following research grants and collaborative research projects.
